Many people know that Vermont granite from the Barre area has been used for over a century to create monuments, sculptures, and memorials around the world. What’s less known is that granite from the Hardwick area–from the blue-gray rock of Hardwick itself to the paler “Bethel white” slabs–was used to construct over 100 buildings across the country, including several state capitols, city halls, and museums. From the middle of the 19th century the Woodbury Granite Company quarried granite and shipped it via rail across the country. Recently the Burlington Free Press chronicled the company’s prominence in American architecture.
