Vermont companies have risen creatively to the challenge of recruiting skilled workers, according to “Small Business Thinks Big About Recruiting,” an article featuring two Vermont businesses, published by WSJ last week.
Arlington-based manufacturer Mack Molding Co. bolstered its internship program to encourage college students to transition to full-time employment, now offering summer membership at a local gym or golf club, and increased the scope of intern work to include projects like helping to develop prototypes for new surgical instruments.
Similarly, GW Plastics Inc., a plastics manufacturer based in Bethel, offers for-credit classes in advanced manufacturing to students at local high schools. The company also maintains a scholarship, which covers the cost of tuition and provides a paid internship to students pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering technology at Vermont Technical College.
